Transmitting Laboratory Data
Authored by: Mark F. Russo
There are multiple options for transmitting experimental data from the point of collection to the point of processing or storage. The most common options include:
- Copy files to a networked disk drive connected as network attached storage
- Directly inserting data into a database management system using proprietary communication protocols such as SQL*Net
- Transfer files over a network using Remote Copy (RCP) or File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
- Post data to a web server using a protocol such as HTTP, SOAP, XML-RPC, ...
- Capture data with a custom print driver
- Direct network transmission using raw TCP/IP sockets or named pipes
- SneakerNet: Copy data onto a portable storage device, such as a flash drive, and "run" it to the remote location where it is copied off.
