ALA 2008 Laboratory Automation Survey
Authored by: Steven D. Hamilton, Santias Consulting

The ALA recently conducted a survey of laboratory automation system providers and industrial users, as a detailed followup to the 2006 Survey on the State of Industrial Laboratory Automation.  In many cases, similar questions were posed to compare the focus and priorities of automation users vs. providers.  The responses will be presented in the following series of articles.  A detailed article with editorial commentary from both the vendor and user community will be published in JALA later in 2009.

The cost for 2008 Laboratory Automation Industry Research was graciously underwritten by Agilent Technologies, Caliper Life Sciences, PerkinElmer, Symyx Technologies, and Thermo Fisher Scientific

SECTION 1: AUTOMATION SYSTEM USE & NEEDS
See also Section 2: Trends or Section 3: Organizations & Lab Automation or Section 4:Demographics

1.1
Validation of new processes on automated systems

Most "7" rankings - "Limitations of the automation control software" Most "8" rankings - "Offering technical resources or expertise to customers"
The response with the "most" top rankings represents the choice most people would make if they could make only "one" choice, vs. the ranking of all responses represents the choices that would be made if multiple options are available.  Some small variation between the two modes of analysis is normal.

1.2
Developing new assays/procedures directly on automated systems

Most "7" rankings - "Need for technical resources or expertise".  Most "9" rankings - "Reducing limitations of the automation control software "

1.3
Reconfiguring automated systems for new assays/procedures

Most "5" rankings - "Limitations of the automation control software " Most "6" rankings was "Reducing limitations of the automation control software"

1.4 User Question
Transferring or validating assays
When transferring manual assays to an automated platform, I: When validating a transferred manual assay on an automated platform, I:
